Plate XXV. TOLEDO. The Cathedral. Wrought Iron and Bronze Screen to Choir
This very handsome screen, undoubtedly the masterpiece of Domingo de Cespedes, was finished in 1548 by Fernando Bravo. It is a finer example than the larger and more ornate screen to the High Altar, completed in the same year by Francisco de Villapando.
The spaces between the large circular pillars which are of bronze wrought with exquisite reliefs, are filled in with solid iron balusters, which at one time were plated with silver, while the upper cresting bears traces of colour and gilding.
The candelabra terminates are solid and round, as shown in the section; the figures and heads of the grotesques are fully modeled, and not formed of thin flat plates as in the earlier examples of screens.
