About the Artist
John Gould (1804–1881) was one of the most celebrated ornithological illustrators of the 19th century, often called the "Bird Man" of Victorian England. His five-volume masterpiece A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-Birds (1849–1861) remains one of the most breathtaking natural history publications ever produced, capturing over 360 species in extraordinary detail. Gould's prints are prized by collectors worldwide for their extraordinary scientific accuracy, vivid hand-finished colouring, and their role in shaping our understanding of natural history.
