Oliver Twist or The Parish Boy's Progress is Charles Dickens's second novel. The story centres on the orphan Oliver Twist born in a workhouse and sold into an apprenticeship with an undertaker.
This print comes from a series of Character sketches from Charles Dickens novels, Portrayed by Kyd in a series of watercolour sketches.
Mr. Bumble is the cruel, pompous beadle of the poorhouse where the orphaned Oliver was raised. Bumble is part of middle-class society and works as a beadle in a small town a beadle is a church official
Bumbledom, named after him characterizes the meddlesome self-importance of the petty bureaucrat.
Biography
Joseph Clayton Clarke (1856-7 - 1937)
Clarke worked under the pseudonym "Kyd." he was a British artist best known for his illustrations of characters of the Charles Dickens Novels.
He was born in Peel on the Isle of Man. in 1889, he married Agnes Roberts and they had 9 children. He was also a designer of cigarette cards and postcards
