Mr Pickwick from The Pickwick Papers
Mr Samuel Pickwick was the main protagonist and founder of the Pickwick Club. and was usually portrayed by illustrators as a round-faced, clean-shaven, portly gentleman wearing spectacles.
The posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was Charles Dicken's first novel published in 1836.
First published in 19 issues, over 20 months, the success of the Pickwick Papers popularised serialized fiction and cliffhanger endings.

Biography
Joseph Clayton Clarke (1856-7 - 1937)
Clarke worked under the pseudonym "Kyd." he was a British artist best known for his illustrations of characters of the Charles Dickens Novels.
He was born in Peel on the Isle of Man. in 1889, he married Agnes Roberts and they had 9 children. He was also a designer of cigarette cards and postcards
