Description:
Standing on a rock, & dressed in the antique style, a female figure supports an oval cup, the interior of which is lined with gilded silver. At one end of the vase are large leaves, in the middle of which play a little winged cupid & a child holding a bunch of grapes. Near them, among the flowers, we see doves pecking at each other. At the foot of the rock on which the caryatid is placed, a man leans lovingly towards a woman who is holding a cup in her hand. One notices, among the details strewn on the ground, some vases whose shape imitates that of Flemish sandstone. A border of gilded & chased silver, depicting a garland of flowers & fruits, surrounds the lower part of the cup. Francis Van Bossuit, whose style is somewhat reminiscent of this piece, was born in Brussels in 1635. After having made a long stay in Italy, where his talent was highly appreciated, he came to settle in Amsterdam: he died there on September 22, 1692. His works, drawn by Barent- Graat, have been reproduced in a volume that bears the following title: The Cabinet of the Art of Sculpture, by the famous sculptor Francis Van Bossuit, executed in even or sketched in clay. (Amsterdam, 1727.)
