Description:
This piece of furniture is made up of walnut wood and is in two parts. On the upper central panel, the judgment of Paris is framed by friezes formed of trophies and fruits. On each side, which opens like a shutter, is a niche, surmounted by a group of two seated women, & in this niche is a naked figure, standing: & on the right, Amphitrite; on the left, Neptune. These two figures are engraved by Jacques Bink, in the work of Rosso. The frieze which separates the two parts is a free imitation of the combat of the Tritons by A. Mantegna. On the leaves of the lower part, we see, on one side, a standing king & queen; on the other, a young man & a young woman, near a herd & holding hands. The artist probably wanted to represent, on the first of these leaves, Hélène & Ménélas, & on the other, this same Hélène & the shepherd Paris. All the details of this piece of furniture offer rare perfection. Ornaments, in paste encrusted, which decorate certain parts, are of great delicacy.
